Sail Away on the Endless Summer! Whether on a shrimp boat, kayak, or sailboat, one of the best ways to teach about our cultural and natural history is to put them on a boat.  The brown water of the Cape Fear, the green water of our estuaries and creeks, as well as the blue water of the Atlantic Ocean is at the heart of our programming.  The confluence of these waters make our region unique and children have an opportunity through our Monday on The Water classes to meet all three.

4-Day Mariners Camp.  In conjunction with the Southport Wooden Boat Show, students learn to build boats of all sizes.  Students are creating canoe/kayak hybrids that they named the Cape Fear, Cape Lookout, and Cape Hatteras to represent the three capes of North Carolina.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site.  Field trip excursions to other historic sites and museums give participants a broader understanding of the significance of the Lower Cape Fear.  Trips include Brunswick Town-Fort Anderson, Fort Caswell, and Bald Head Island.

Ferry through the periscope

A view from the museum periscope.  The museum’s main gallery is filled with hands-on history and help children have a better understanding of our maritime past through active involvement.
